Murchison is apparently wearing the star of the Russian order of St Stanislaus. The date of the portrait was provided by the artist in a memorandum of c.1899 (NPG archives).

Dark complexion, with high-coloured cheeks, blue(?) eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers. Dressed in a black stock, white shirt, gold monocle, black waistcoat and coat, with a silver star. Background colour brown.
Provenanceback to top
Commissioned or purchased by Lady Franklin, and bequeathed by her niece, Miss Sophia Cracroft, in accordance with the wishes of her aunt, 1892.
