Possibly a study for Jones' painting of the 'Battle of Hyderabad', exhibited RA, 1854 (13), which shows Napier in a prominent position on the battlefield. Napier also appears in Jones' painting of the 'Battle of Meeanee, 1843' in the Royal Collection, an outline drawing for which was exhibited RA, 1849 (938).

Healthy complexion, brown eyes, brown hair with grey streaks, and grey whiskers. Dressed in white shirt and dark brown coat or cloak, with a darker garment underneath, which just shows at the neck. Background colour grey-green.
