In spite of the remarkable likeness to the Geddes portrait of his father Alexander Nasmyth this drawing was vouched for by his brother James in a letter to Scharf 2 May 1872, 'The portrait of my Brother Patrick is perfectly authentic - a good likeness and I believe it the only Portrait of him extant …’ (papers in NPG archive).
