Abbott's original, painted at Greenwich for Captain Locker in 1797, is discussed in NPG 394. It was immensely popular as a subject for miniaturists and dozens of copies are known in many collections. One by H. P. Bone's father, Henry Bone, dated 1826, was lent by Jeffery Whitehead to Burlington Fine Arts Club, Miniature Exhibition, 1889 (p 59) and Exhibition of the Royal House of Guelph, New Gallery, 1891 (1062).

Half-length in rear-admiral's undress uniform, Star of Bath, one Naval Gold Medal on white ribbon with blue borders, edge of Ribbon of the Bath showing against white waistcoat, three black wound ribbons on right sleeve; blue eyes, soft grey hair, smooth smiling expression.
