This is a study for the drawing of 18 at Oriel College, Oxford. In a letter of 15 July 1896 (NPG archives), one of Richmond's executors, F. W. Farrer, wrote about the NPG drawing, 'which my eldest brother who knew Newman well liked better than the engraved drawing - I mean thought it a better likeness'.
