According to Corfield 'the medallion was modelled from a cast of Mr Owen's head taken during life by Deville of the Strand' (letter 22 March 1881 in NPG archive). Leverotti was a pupil of Westmacott; Deville a well-known phrenologist once mocked by Sydney Smith and Tom Moore (see Blake).
