In spite of an appeal by J. B. Lamb in Country Life, 7 April 1977, pp 848-9 not much information about either Owen or Montague is forthcoming. The donor writes '... I may state that Owen was a distant relative of my paternal grandfather to whom the portrait belonged and from whose estate it passed to me many years ago. It is a family tradition that the little picture of yachts on the easel is the work of Owen himself' (letter from Ezard 9 October 1942 in NPG archive).
