This is one of a large collection of original Vanity Fair cartoons which were owned and specially mounted by the first proprietor of the magazine, Thomas Bowles. The water-colour of Payne was published as a coloured lithograph in Vanity Fair on 18 September 1875, with the title, 'GP'.

Physical descriptionback to top

Healthy complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers with grey streaks. Dressed in a blue and white cross-striped neck-tie, white shirt, black frock-coat, grey trousers, black shoes and top-hat, holding a pair of black binoculars.
