Signed and dated lower left: W Peters/Novr 7 1758 and with traces of other inscriptions on chair and palette; inscribed along lower edge of backing paper: The Late Robert West - (a celebrated Artist) Drawing the Portrait of Wm Peters an Artist - afterwards the Rev Wm Peters RA.

Peters as a boy on the left has his portrait drawn by Robert West, master of the Royal Dublin Society School. For a boy of 16 this quite complicated tour de force is a mark of the high standard achieved by the School under West.
