This was offered with thirteen other drawings by Bryan of various people, most of them apparently connected with the stage; few of the others could be identified, and only the drawings of Phelps and Swinburne (NPG 3016) were purchased. There are, however, several other works by Bryan in the collection, acquired at different times from other sources; he specialized in caricatures of theatrical personalities. Another caricature of Phelps by him (in character) was published as a woodcut in an unidentified magazine (cutting in NPG).
