Inscribed on a label, formerly on the back of the painting, are some notes from the National Portrait Gallery Illustrated Guide, referring to pictures by Phillip and Macnee, probably by the donor.

The attribution was supplied by the donor, and is questionable. The identification is certainly right.

Grisaille sketch, mainly in blacks, greys and whites. Brown eyes, white hair and beard. Dressed in a white shirt, black neck-tie, black waistcoat, jacket and skull-cap.
