This portrait was probably bought at the artist's sale, Christie's, 24 June 1870, where many of Maclise's drawings and water-colours were sold in large uncatalogued lots. It has the same provenance as two other Maclise water-colours of Jerdan and Dunlop, presented at the same time (NPG 3028 and 3029). The collector's stamp in the bottom right hand corner is that of Sir William Drake (Lugt 736).
