Inscribed in pencil on backing paper: E Reynolds (perhaps signature), and in modern purple pencil: S W Reynolds/by Elizabeth/Walker.

Elizabeth Walker was Reynolds's daughter. The miniature of her father though not an exact copy derives fairly closely from his self-portrait NPG 4989, and in view of her signature on the backing card was probably painted before her marriage to the engraver William Walker in 1829 or 1830.

Head and shoulders to right in dark grey coat, white neckcloth; curly black hair, brown eyes, swarthy complexion, serious expression; scumbled green background.
