The artist apparently made a copy of this portrait for himself, shortly before presenting the original (see letters from him, NPG archives). A coat of arms is faintly visible in the top left-hand corner. This or another version was recorded in the collection of the artist's sister, Mrs Samuel Carter (Dictionary of National Biography).
