In the course of his European travels Roxburghe spent at least four months, from August to November 1761, in Florence where he was well received by Horace Mann and painted three times by Mann’s protégé, Thomas Patch. NPG 724 is a loosely-brushed caricature, in which, as Ribeiro has observed, Roxburghe stands fashionably posed, showing off a well-turned leg and a fine lace ruffle [1] – but the setting is perfunctory (and the urn not centred on the pedestal). Roxburghe’s remarkably retroussé nose, as drawn at least three times by Patch, became quite Roman in later portraits.
