Inscribed in pencil in upper left-hand corner: Saunders Ipse Pinxit. Aetatis 50/November the First Anno 1732.

The inscription has been traced over an earlier one, now indecipherable, and cannot therefore be accepted without reservations. What may possibly be the date 1752 can be read beneath the transcribed 1732 and the figures 49 can be seen to the right of the inscription.

Grey eyes, grey eyebrows, grey hair just visible at temples, pale pock-marked complexion; bright blue nightcap edged with gold lace, putty-coloured waistcoat over white shirt, light brown coat with bright blue facings; grey background with blue drapery, brown palette hanging from nail on wall, right.
