This is a study for the oil painting in the Royal Institute of British Architects, listed in Richmond's 'Account Book' (photostat copy, NPG archives), p 94, under 1877, exhibited RA, 1878 (460), and VE, 1892 (196), etched by A. L. Merritt, published 1879 (example in British Museum). A smaller variant version, said to have been painted around 1870, is in the Royal Academy, presented by the artist, 1886. There is a reference in Richmond's 'Account Book', p 86, to a portrait begun in 1870, possibly a reference to one of the oils. The NPG drawing was purchased with several other Richmond items. It was apparently engraved for Scott's Personal and Professional Recollections, edited G. G. Scott (1879), frontispiece.
