This drawing of Frank Short was purchased for £25, as part of a collection of 43 drawings by William Rothenstein, from Deval and Muir, Bishop’s Stortford, in April 1970. [1] It is preparatory to the lithographic portrait, which is a slightly larger composition which carries a dedication to the sitter, and is signed, dated and inscribed on the stone. [2] Some of the lithographs were printed in red ink (see NPG D20899).
See ‘Drawings by Sir William Rothenstein, 1899–1938’, NPG 4763–4805.
