The drawing was bought in 1936 among a collection of seven (Trelawny (2), Dr Matthews, the Hon M. Fortescue, R. M. Hay and Lady Scott) and listed as 'an unknown man (perhaps Canon Sydney Smith) by Sir E Landseer'. A comparison with NPG 4917 leaves no doubt as to its identity.
