Inscribed in ink, verso, in an 18th-century(?) hand: John Lord Somers/Baron of Evesham/Chancellor of England/He was the chief/Instrument in bringing/about the Union between/England and Scotland.

The identity rests on the inscription verso. In 1976 Murrell very tentatively suggested an attribution to Joseph Goupy. [1]
