The original bust by Macdonald is at Chevening, the home of the Stanhopes; it was sketched by G. Scharf, Sir George Scharf's Sketch Books (NPG archives), XCIII, 83, and is reproduced H. Ward, History of the Athenaeum (1926), facing p 74. Another undated bust of Stanhope by Macdonald is also at Chevening, for which see R. Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors (1953), p 249. Armstead executed a medallion of Stanhope for the Home Office building (see his letter to Scharf of 6 February 1875, NPG archives).
