This is a reduced cast of the stone medallion on the exterior of the NPG building; the original full-scale plaster model for this was in the NPG, reproduced Magazine of Art (1895), p 431. In connection with the large medallion, the sitter's son, the 6th Earl Stanhope, wrote to George Scharf (letter of 12 March 1894, NPG archives):
'I am sorry to find that I have no large sized Photographs of my Father here, though there are a few at Chevening. If you will therefore kindly send me a Postcard of Mr Thomas' Junr. direction, I will send him a Photograph, on the first opportunity ... I should be glad to have a good medallion of my Father at the New Nat. Portrait Gallery.'
