Provenanceback to top

1 John Warner, goldsmith of Temple Bar; his daughter Kitty (1739-72), who married Jervoise Clarke (1734-1808), who assumed the name of Clarke-Jervoise in 1777 (and bought Idsworth from Lord Dormer in 1789); by descent to Major A. F. Clarke-Jervoise of Idsworth Park, Hants.; his sale, Christie’s, 21 March 1975, lot 136, bought Osborne; Christie’s, 19 December 1975, lot 5, bought Leggatt for the NPG.

1 This provenance is based on a letter of 20 February 1976 (on file) from K. S. Southam, executor of Maj. A. F. Clarke-Jervoise (and see R. Blanchard, The correspondence of Sir Richard Steele, 1941, pp 55, 61, 68, 81, 277, 298, 308). John Warner, a godson of Bishop Burnet, was Steele’s banker and godfather to Eugene, Steele’s son; he sat to Richardson in 1720 (Idsworth sale, 21 March 1975, lot 137; Phillips, 8 June 1995, lot 84).
