A version of this drawing, probably the original is on loan to the Scottish NPG (L36) formerly attributed to Archibald Skirving. This was probably done shortly after Henning's arrival in Edinburgh in 1803. In an autobiographical letter to William Mure, Henning says he arrived in London on 9 July 1811 having been engaged by the Marquess of Lansdowne 'to make copies of my Drawings of Dr Adam Fergusson and Dugald Stewart' (John Malden, John Henning, 1977, 36). He modelled from the drawing soon after his arrival in London and enamel paste versions signed and dated 1811 are in the Wedgwood Museum, the Scottish NPG and the Museum of Science and Art in Edinburgh. A copy was exhibited RA 1812 (682) in a frame containing medallions of Stewart, Miss Grace Henning, Lord Frederick Campbell, the Earl of Lauderdale, Lady Charlotte Campbell, Adam Fergusson, Walter Scott, Dr Alexander Carlyle and J. F. Erskine. A mould of the Dugald Stewart medallion was among a set of six sent to Wedgwood in October 1813 and the Stewart and Scott medallions were issued by Wedgwood in 1815 (John Malden, John Henning, 1977, 15).
