Miss Sharpe, in her letter of 1897 in NPG archive, gives the history as far as she knew it: '... a small pencil drawing of Stothard by Flaxman, about 6 inches square which is part of the collection of my father the late Mr William Sharpe, and was given to his father by Mr Flaxman or Mr Stothard I believe and who were both friends of our family …' An undated black chalk head in profile by Flaxman is in the British Museum (Laurence Binyon, Catalogue of Drawings by British Artists … in the British Museum, II, 158).
