Derby made small watercolour copies for Lord Derby of all the known portraits of the Stanley family. [1] NPG 2424 is copied from Hudson’s three-quarter length portrait at Knowsley [2] showing Lord Strange in masquerade dress, holding a mask in his left hand; Derby also drew a squared-up outline of this portrait (NPG archive). [3]
The composition compares closely with Hudson’s William Bouverie, Earl of Radnor, which is dated 1749. [4] There appear to be three contemporary versions: one on the London Art market in 1986, [5] another from Sizergh Castle sold at Christie’s, 4 May 1951, lot 26, [6] and a third sold Christie’s, 20 November 1987, lot 87. A copy by James Cranke was sold Sotheby’s, 29 July 1964, lot 303, and a half-length copy was in a private collection in 1992.
