Presumably related to the marble bust exhibited RA, 1870 (1172), which is probably the bust of 1870 now at Castle Howard. Noble also executed a statue of the Duchess for Dunrobin Castle (1869), and a recumbent effigy for the chapel at Trentham (1868), the latter reproduced Art Journal (1875), p 183. A plaster model related to one of these was at Elswick Hall, Newcastle, listed in Catalogue of Lough and Noble Models at Elswick Hall (c.1928), p 57 (185). The NPG bust was presented at the same time as a bust of Sir James Scarlett (NPG 807), both of which were described as original models of busts (letter from the donor of 19 July 1888, NPG archives). The Duchess of Sutherland is shown wearing the badge of the order of Victoria and Albert. The monogram 'H S' beneath a ducal coronet is modelled in relief on the front of the base.
