The portrait, first exhibited in 1817, was possibly painted in connection with the appearance of Turner's first volume of the History of England which came out in 1816 and caused Southey to remark that 'so much information was probably never laid before the public in one historical publication’.

Physical descriptionback to top

Half-length to right aged about 50, dark green coat with brass buttons, cream waistcoat, white neckcloth and voluminous white bow-tie; black hair grizzled at sides, dark grey eyes, swarthy complexion; fluted column and red drape to left, plain drab background with vertical line to right.

Family possession and given by his grandson Sharon Grote Turner 1919.
