This portrait is not listed in Margaret Carpenter's 'Sitters Book' (copy of original MS, NPG archives), presumably because it was not sold. In a letter of 26 December 1870 (NPG archives), J. Gibson Craig, a friend of the sitter, referred to the portrait as the 'most absurd caricature & has not the smallest resemblance. Tytler was a little man with rather a broad face & never had any pretention to dandyism.' Gibson Craig owned the small painting by Sir J. Watson Gordon, now in the Scottish NPG.
