The bust was commissioned by Vaughan's friend and business associate Daniel Alexander, the architect of the London Docks. Sir Francis Chantrey’s Ledgers of Accounts (p 1) record an order for two busts for Daniel Alexander and William Vaughan himself in 1813 and completed in 1816 for 100 guineas each. The first of these, with payment deferred to 1814 may refer to NPG 4934; the second was offered to Christie's in 1975, to the NPG in 1976 and re-appeared at Sotheby's 13 July 1978 (252) and 23 March 1979 (106), head and shoulders in toga and incised: Chantrey sculptor 1815. A plaster cast in the American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia, was presented by an heir of John Vaughan in 1842.
