Russell was a particular friend of both the Elliotts of Clapham and the Venns, evangelist families related by marriage (see G. C. Williamson, John Russell, 1894, pp 44-45).

By descent to the sitter’s great-great-nephew, the Rev E. J. Elliott, rector of Broadwater, Worthing; his widow, Mrs E. H. Elliott, by whom bequeathed 1943.
