This copy of the portrait by Von Angeli in the Royal Collection was painted with the idea of presentation to the NPG. It was approved by the Queen, who also liked the few slight alterations from the original. The artist, who had received lessons from Mrs Clarendon Smith of the Institute of Water-colours (information about Lady Abercromby's career in her letter of 22 November 1883, NPG archives), was one of Queen Victoria's Ladies of the Bedchamber. Queen Victoria is shown wearing the order of the Garter and the order of Victoria and Albert.
