This over life-size bust is related to the head of Queen Victoria's bronze statue in front of Windsor Castle; this shows her full-length, standing, and is reproduced R. R. Holmes, 'The Queen's Pictures', Jubilee Number of the Magazine of Art (1887), p 45. Queen Victoria herself gave permission for the bust to be placed in the collection (letter of 19 March 1891, from her secretary, Sir Henry Ponsonby, NPG archives).
A marble statue by Boehm of 1871, showing Queen Victoria seated with a dog, is also at Windsor Castle, reproduced The Portfolio (1885), facing p 234. There is a related statuette, showing some variations, of 1869 (examples in bronze, Royal Collection, and collection of Professor W. E. Fredeman); the type was exhibited in terra-cotta RA, 1870 (1125). A bust related to the 1871 statue is in the Royal Geographical Society, London, and another is at Waddesdon Manor. A version or model of one of the statues was exhibited VE, 1892 (1061), lent by the artist's executors. Boehm also executed a marble bust of Queen Victoria for her eldest daughter, Victoria, later Empress of Germany, the model for which was exhibited Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery, 1884 (415). Another marble bust by Boehm was exhibited RA, 1874 (1534).
