George Frederic Watts

Sculptor Henry Poole worked at Watts’s studio in Compton between 1902 and 1904, having formerly been apprenticed to Harry Bates. He assisted with the making of the sitter’s death mask, NPG 5283. His later career was occupied with portraits, architectural sculpture and relief figures; he is also credited with the interior decoration of the Black Friar pub in London. He was elected ARA in 1920, and RA in 1927.

The date of execution has not been ascertained, but the work is similar in size and format to the artist’s memorial statuette of First World War pilot Albert Ball (NPG 2277) produced in the 1920s.
