The original mask was made with the help of a camera lucida on 16 September 1852, three days after the Duke's death, and is probably that presented to the Royal Institution by the 2nd Duke (Wellesley and Steegman, Iconography of the 1st Duke of Wellington, 1935, pp 1 and 53). The mask was developed into Adam's marble busts at Apsley House and in the Duke of Sutherland's collection, considered by the 2nd Duke and his friends 'as the best by far that has appeared' (letter to Adams 16 November 1852, Wellesley and Steegman, Iconography of the 1st Duke of Wellington, 1935, p 1 and Rupert Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors 1660-1851, 1953, p 13). Undraped herm copies are in the Royal Collection (Buckingham Palace), Badminton, Duke of Buccleuch's collection, Burghley House, Corsham Court, Stratfield Saye, War Office Whitehall, in the Chapel on the field of Waterloo, etc. A copy dated 1855 was at Christie's 11 December 1979 (37). The profile on the Wellington Funeral Medal by G. G. Adams also derives from the death-mask.
