In a letter of 20 April 1924 (NPG archives), the donor wrote: 'The drawing was made about the year 1863 and as I can testify, who knew him well, is an admirable likeness.' Another water-colour by the same artist of 1865 was in the collection of James Lowther. A bronze medallion by the 9th Earl is in the collection of Lord Henley, exhibited George Howard and his Circle, City Art Gallery, Carlisle, 1968 (127).
