The drawing is among a group of sketchy portraits made surreptitiously when Lear was a student in the RA Schools (see similar drawings of Turner and West). These were done in 1844-5 but in this the sitter appears to be very much older than in Brockedon's drawing of 1844 and may therefore have been done nearer 1850 or after.
