The portrait is possibly the chalk drawing profile to right listed as being from the collection of the Hon Gerald Ponsonby in Sir W. Armstrong's Lawrence, 1913, p 189. The back-board bears Christie's stencil 000 III and in pencil Hon G. Ponsonby and a small circular paper label 1363/Lawrence/4. Gerald Henry Ponsonby (1829-1908) was 7th son of 4th Earl of Bessborough and Maria, 3rd daughter of 10th Earl of Westmorland and sister of 11th Earl. Since Armstrong's day the drawing has not been accepted as an original Lawrence but it is nevertheless extremely competent and may have been made for John Bull's stipple engraving of 1838.
