Related to the marble bust of Whewell by Baily of 1851 at Trinity College, Cambridge, which was exhibited RA, 1852 (1440). The vendor wrote (letter of 18 June 1904, NPG archives) that the NPG bust 'was done on the sly for my husband, who was then a rich undergraduate & being a great admirer of Dr Whewell, he coaxed the man to sell him this cast'. Another plaster cast is in the Department of Geology, Cambridge, catalogued by J. W. Goodison, Catalogue of Cambridge Portraits (1955), p 147. A bust by Baily, said to be of 1850, was in the Crystal Palace Portrait Collection, 1854.
