William IV is wearing the uniform of an ordinary army general of the c.1825-8 pattern, with the star of the Garter. He is presumably represented as a general of Marines. Faint grid-lines are visible across the whole of the drawing. The attribution to Hayter is traditional. The drawing is not related to Hayter's group of the 'House of Lords, 1820' (see NPG 999 and 1659(J)).

Henriks Sale; Mrs M. E. Sadleir, presented by her, 1911.
