The drawing is undated and unrecorded in the British Museum Linnell Sketchbooks but the sitter appears to be in his early sixties. Lot 82 in the Linnell sale consisted of a packet of 16 drawings of which 7 (Bagster, Crotch (2), Jeffrey, Murray, Perry and Young) remain in the NPG, the others being dispersed at a modest profit to the Scottish NPG, the Office of Works, Sir Edmund Gosse, Sir John Lane and elsewhere.

Half-length seated to left aged 60-5, the head finished in red and black chalk touched with white, the body sketched in pencil.
