This portraitback to top

This drawing is part of a large sequence of portraits by (William) Walker Hodgson, depicting figures associated with the arts.

At this date Hayes was over 80 years old and the doyen of marine painters, though his best-known work, Sunset at Sea (Tate, N01603) was not exhibited until 1894. The inscription refers to his membership of the Royal Hibernian Academy and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.
