Inscriptionback to top
The original mount, removed during subsequent conservation, is inscribed: Sir Thomas Lawrence fecit1 Henry Constantine Jennings Esqr.
1 Lawrence was knighted in 1815, which implies this inscription is not contemporary.
This portraitback to top
Probably drawn in 1799 when Lawrence painted the sitter’s daughter; [1] the engraved portrait of 1815 appears to show an older figure.

1) K. Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence: a complete catalogue of the oil paintings, 1989, no.440; private collection.
Provenanceback to top
1 By descent from the sitter’s daughter Elizabeth, who married 1805 William Locke II of Norbury Park; their daughter, who married the 3rd Baron Wallscourt, thence to the 5th Baron (d. 1920); his daughter, Mrs Leycester Storr, Cowes, IOW; Sotheby’s, 7 July 1983, lot 85; Clarendon Gallery, London, from whom purchased 1984.
1 The earlier part of this provenance is deduced from the fact that NPG 5711 belonged to Lord Wallscourt before 1920 (photograph in NPG archive; D’Arblay, V, IV, p 466).
