Sir Francis Chantrey’s Ledgers of Accounts (p 206) record an order of 1828 from Lord Farnborough on behalf of the British Gallery for a marble bust and its execution and fixing in position 26 May 1830 for 200 guineas. The plaster model is Ashmolean Museum (645-133); the marble bust, transferred from the British Institution to the Royal Horticultural Society, is incised: CHANTREY. SC./MDCCCXXIX, and was exhibited 'Sir Francis Chantrey', NPG, 1980 (25). A marble copy was commissioned by the Marchioness of Stafford in January 1829 and executed in October 1830 for 150 guineas (Sir Francis Chantrey’s Ledgers of Accounts, p 222). Presumably this is NPG 5597, acquired from Mallett in 1982 but unfortunately without provenance. Gunnis's Dictionary of British Sculptors 1660-1851, 1953 (p 94) lists a marble bust by Chantrey of 1828 at Dunrobin Castle in 1951, but this appears to be a mistake as no such bust is recorded in the Sutherland collection today.
Statues by Chantrey are in the parish church at Trentham (reproduced in Margaret Whinney, Sculpture in Britain 1530-1830, 1964, plate 181B) with a colossal bronze version on a column about a mile south of the ruins of Trentham Park (Pevsner, Staffordshire, p 285).
