Payne: whole-length standing at left, looking to right.Joseph Frank Payne arrived at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1858, two years after the Old Mortality Society was founded. He gained a reputation ‘as a zealous student, which was fully justified by his obtaining his BA degree with first class honours in 1862, the Burdett-Coutts scholarship in Geology in 1863 [and] the Radcliffe Travelling Fellowship in Medicine in 1865 … In 1867 he took his M.B. degree at Oxford’. [1] By the time of this photograph, Old Mortality had widened its doors, and the group includes men from five different colleges. Payne, who stands at left, is the youngest and the only scientist among them.
