Miss Lowry married John Varley as his second wife in 1825, the drawing probably being done shortly after their marriage, Matilda Heming being Varley's half-sister. After Varley's death in 1842 his widow became governess to the Carvalho family and the drawing was given to the Gallery by one of her pupils.
