Received in 1909 as a portrait of the youthful Isaac Newton (1642-1727), but there is not the slightest resemblance. Costume suggests a date of c.1670-80.

Rev. J. Bowen by 1807 (when he was applied to by 'a gentleman for this portrait to shew it to one of the colleges in Cambridge where Sir Isaac was educated but I did not choose to part with it');1 bought Captain Thomas P. Clarke; by 1865 with his son, the Rev. Charles Pickering Clarke, by whom bequeathed 1909 as Sir Issac Newton, 'the only portrait in England of him when a young man'.2
