Samuel Rogers stands in black frock-coat and grey trousers in the window of his drawing-room in St James's Place; to the left are the three visiting Clerk ladies in poke bonnets, black shawls, fur tippets, blue and white striped skirts. The drawing seems to have been cut down the right side bisecting the seated figure of Moore of whom only a leg, top-hat and cane can be seen; crimson curtains and bow-window overlooking the Green Park in the background.
The drawing is fixed into an album of delightful sketches of the Clerk family, at home in Penicuik, in their London house in Park Street, picnicking in the country, etc. It appears on page 28 below a drawing of Peel showing off his pictures in Whitehall Gardens (see Richard Ormond, National Portrait Gallery: Early Victorian Portraits, 1973, p 370). It is not dated but the Peel drawing and other neighbouring drawings in the album are dated 1844 which would accord with the apparent age of Rogers whose bald head and sardonic smile are cleverly exploited.

Provenanceback to top

The Clerk family and by descent to Miss Clerk who presented it in 1935. See Richard Ormond, National Portrait Gallery: Early Victorian Portraits, 1973.
