The 'modest school' of miniaturists is well represented in this group of unworldly characters. Holland's performances as Hamlet, Iago, Macbeth and other Shakespearean roles were cruelly satirised by Charles Churchill in 'The Rosciad' (1761). Joseph Hutchinson, 'an eminent painter of the City of Bath', turned from full-sized oils to miniatures late in life and specialised in portraits of musicians, actors and doctors of the Bath world.
