Mitchell is shown wearing the mantle and collar of a Knight of the Bath, an honour he received in 1765. The portrait is a copy after one by Allan Ramsay, signed and dated 1766. It belonged to a branch of the Mitchell family. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
